I’ve posted this photo once before; it’s my Grandpa Matt
(or as they say in the American South where he grew up: “Massie”).
My grandpa was a Marine in World War Two.
Deployed to the Pacific Theatre, he landed on Tinian, Saipan, and Iwo Jima.
He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and a variety of other honors. 
The two things I know about my grandpa while he was in the service are also the two things I know to be true of him during his childhood (raising cotton in Arkansas) and during his post-war adult life (raising my father and uncle):
He believed absolutely in working as hard as you can,
and in never giving up.
He passed away on the first of February of this year, at the age of 88.
